Why This Blog?

February 8, 2010 Site Announcements 2 Comments

My husband Mark started this blog to share our experience with ditching the cable and dish TV company’s in favour of free or almost free TV.  I have to say I was pretty doubtful at first about what this would be like.  I should first explain that I am not a tech nerd.  I am an educated mom, so I have a few clues but I am just not interested in all the techno stuff.  I ‘glaze over’ pretty quickly!  All I want is to push a few buttons and a DVD plays or I access some online TV content that is easy to find and reliable!

We took the plunge in May 2009 and cancelled our paid TV subscription.  OK, my first experience was that it was too complicated and that the software Mark found to stream the shows to our TV was hard to work  – I had to take notes to have any chance of remembering what did what.  If it crashed when he was not home I had no hope of getting it back up again.  Since then the software has improved and it is much easier to use and Mark bought some new gizmos.

So for the average man or woman on the street we thought we would document our experience and give you some other options to look at.  I am going to write about the user experience (how to work it) and Mark is going to contribute the techno stuff (I will run through it first to make sure it is understandable!).

Ciao, for now,

Julie

So, I’m sure this is not a priority for you, but given that it’s over the internet, does this mean we should be able to get it here in NZ too?

  2. Jo,
Hulu looks at your IP address and won’t run if it detects an IP outside of the USA. However if you use a proxy with a US IP it works just fine.

If you use a Mac then you can get a free little application called Hotspot shield which will do this for you. I’ve tried it from New Zealand and it works fine.

Hope this helps. I will make a post on this subject (watching US content in the rest of the World) soon.

In my first 2 posts on this topic I have reviewed Netflix and how …
